NYC: The Tavern at Gramercy Tavern (⭐️)

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

Focaccia

This delicious and fresh bread was very unique. It’s like a small pizza and the tomatoes and blueberries worked well with the charred flavor to add some sourness and fruitiness. The focaccia was fluffy and well cooked with a crispy crust on the edge. 10/10

Cherry Spritzer

The cherry had a bit of sweetness and tartness, with the ginger adding some nice spiciness. It was very refreshing and interesting. 9/10

Duck Liver Mousse

The liver’s flavor was very nice and not overpowering because the cherry compote and pickles helped contrast the flavor. It made a great mix of sour, sweet, pungent, richness, and savory. Texturally, the pickle’s crunch and juiciness, the creaminess of the mousse, and the crunchiness of the bread worked amazingly together as well. 10/10

Roasted Oysters

The oysters stayed so tender and juicy during roasting while removing some of the raw flavor and brine. The puffed rice on top added great contrast with the plumpness of the oyster and the sauce had a nice sour and savory taste. A wonderful combination of flavors and textures, but the oysters were slightly small. 9/10

Tavern Burger

The burger was so juicy, tender, and flavorful, but the bacon and cheese made it a bit too salty. The chips were wonderfully thin and buttery. The aioli was standard but good. The burger patty was the best that I ever had, but the burger as a whole was not perfect. 9/10

Pork Shoulder

The pork itself was very tender and juicy, and the sauce elevated the flavor in terms of complexity with the sweetness and slight spiciness of it. The pickles were not too sour and rather fresh, which was nice to cut some of the fat of the pork. The spatzel was also great, with a nice char and wonderful soft and crispy texture to complement the pork. 10/10

Arctic Char

The fish was very tender and juicy and the vegetables were fresh, but the grains were rather tough and uninteresting. The mint added nice freshness to the dish. Each component was very well cooked, but overall it lacked anything too interesting. 8/10

Chocolate Pudding Cake

While the presentation was terrible, the cake had a wonderful molten interior and flaky outside. It was burning hot, so the contrast of cold and hot with the ice cream was good. The pecans also added some texture and flavor, and the mascarpone cream was slightly sour so it added complexity. The flavors were great, but the presentation was just too haphazard. 8/10

Final review: The food was amazing and impressive, and the service was friendly as one would expect from a tavern. The restaurant definitely deserved its star. The food was comforting while well-planned, and the bread service was the most unique bread I have ever had. However, the dishes all lacked a bit of sophistication in presentation and in their flavors and textures. 9/10
